Officially Open

2009 Solar Decathalon Entry

In January, 2008 the University of Kentucky (s.ky blue) was selected as 1 of 20 teams from around the world to compete in the 2009 Solar Decathlon.  In this competition, each team is challenged to build a Net-Zero (Net Energy Usage) residential home that is also comfortable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing to occupants and passersby.

The home was designed and assembled (mainly by the students) in Kentucky in a transportable form and on September 28th, 2009, it was loaded onto a semi and transported to the National Mall in Washington, DC. Each team had until noon on Thursday October 8th, 2009 to complete all final installations, inspections, and have final sign off to receive their certificate of occupancy to open to the public, and compete in the Solar Decathlon. s.ky blue received received their final sign off allowing them to represent the Commonwealth of Kentucky in the 2009 Competition over the next 2 weeks against teams from all around the world. You can follow the overall competition from www.solardecathlon.org, or visit Kentucky's site direct at www.uky.edu/solarhouse. The houses will be located on site until October 18th , when they will be broken down and return to their respective homes.
