Intended outcomes
Learn about problems related to unrestricted access to water by livestock.
Learn about restricted access watering point.
Learn how to build a managed stream crossing.
Water needs
Cattle needs water:
12 to 15 gal/head-day (two or three times more on hot and humid weather).
Clean water.
If water provision is inadequate:
Grazing will be concentrated near the water.
Poor livestock distribution.
Unrestricted access to the water
Cattle that spend time in the water and mud are susceptible to diseases.
Water becomes contaminated with livestock wastes, providing a medium for the transfer of diseases.
Livestock trample the banks, increasing erosion and sedimentation.
In water cattle stir up mud and sediments.
Cattle will drink less water when it is dirty.
Access ramp
Build an access ramp as an alternative method to off-stream watering.
Use fencing to deny access to the water except at a designated spot.

Guidelines for ramps
Keep the access limited to prevent loitering and site damage.
The access ramp should be about 20-ft wide for up to 100 cows.
Circular or square-shaped access are preferred.
The wider and larger the access, the more problems you have with cattle congregating at the ramp.

Costs
Geoweb: 8 x 20 ft sections - $280.00 per section.
Rock: $7.20 per Ton (1.5 to 2-in clean) + $3.00 to $4.00 per Ton for hauling.
Track loader/dozer rental: $85.00 per hour.
Geotextile fabric: 15 x 300 ft roll - $300.00 per roll.
Total cost: between $2,000 and $3,000 depending on the stream size.
