6 30-Sep-05 11:00 - 12:00 Dr. Naoshi Kondo “ Food Traceability based on Robotic Agriculture”                             Abstract:
The world has been worrying about the quality of the food supply system because of recent problems with fruits, vegetables, meats, and other processed foods: food poisoning by bacteria, illegal unregistered agricultural chemicals, camouflage products, BSE, etc.  To solve these problems, a food traceability system which can provide the food’s history during production, distribution and consumption is desirable.  Bio-production robots have been substituted for human labor and have contributed to raising product market values and to ensuring product uniformity.  Recent experiences show that these robots can be useful and necessary to add precise information to data relating to field operations and thus can be valuable contributors to precision farming systems.  In this presentation, following our products and developed robots will be introduced:
1. Soil sensor: this was commercialized in Nov., 2004 by SI Seiko company. It gives us organic matter, moisture content, nitrogen, pH, EC, and compactness information of field and it is easy to get each information map of the filed.
2. Seedling production and crop management robots: many commercialized transplanting robots, grafting robots, and some spraying robots are introduced.
3. Fruit harvesting robots: many fruit harvesting robot have been researched but no one reached commercializing stage yet so far.  SI Seiko company is now challenging to commercializing a strawberry harvesting robot with government support.
4. Fruit grading robot and grading machines: SI Seiko commercialized a fruit grading robot for peaches, apples and pears two years ago.  Many automated grading machine systems are introduced.
