Portable Monitoring Unit (PMU) was located in each houses’ control room for ammonia and carbon dioxide monitoring in layer houses. Close up of belt layer house air sampling ports with two filters on lines. Cold weather exhaust fan in background behind hen cages. Each house was fully characterized in relation to dimensions, equipment and management objectives.
Inoperative fan opening and tunnel inlet curtains are well-sealed with sheet plastic covered with rigid insulation during winter in cold climate broiler houses. All the Pennsylvania broiler houses used brooders for supplemental heat. Two houses used a combination of radiant brooders and unit space heaters. Control room exterior to broiler house environment. Tunnel ventilation inlet curtains closed for winter.
Bird level temperature and humidity are recorded during each 48-hour study period. Broiler houses used box inlets placed along both sidewalls for fresh air entry. During winter conditions the ammonia Portable Monitoring Unit (PMU) sampled air from in front of the minimum ventilation exhaust fan.
Ammonia emission monitoring was done for 48-hours every three weeks in each broiler house.

Poultry house static pressure adjusted for FANS tests at ventilation controller. Each fan’s airflow in a broiler house is tested at five static pressures representing normal operating conditions. FANS unit, laptop computer for control and data recording, and static pressure gage with datalogger are used for accurate airflow estimate.
